Jeju Plus International Environment Forum
Distinguished Guests,
We would like to invite you to the ‘Jeju Plus International Environment Forum 2024’,
scheduled to be held on Jeju Island, a pristine treasure island that is poised to become a
global hub for environmental initiatives.
Globally, plastic pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental issues,
prompting heightened efforts and attention from countries around the world.
Against this backdrop, the final meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5)
for the drafting of the “UN Convention on the Prevention of Plastic Pollution”, to be held in
Busan in November 2024, will be a crucial opportunity to assess the world's progress towards
ending plastic pollution by 2040.
In order to achieve zero global plastic pollution, the Jeju Plus International Environment Forum
has been inviting environmental leaders from various fields every year since 2021 to create a
space to express the global collective will and opinions on plastic pollution.
The Forum has played an increasingly important role in the global environmental community by
prioritizing SDGs and ESGs, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality, and promoting a circular
economy as essential steps to address the climate crisis.
This year, in conjunction with the INC-5 International Conference, we will host a forum on
"Our Challenge for Zero Plastic in 2040," where we will listen to and exchange diverse opinions
from domestic and international participants.
Based on the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, various pollution prevention
measures, including the use of renewable raw materials throughout the plastic value chain, as
well as strategies to achieve our goals such as the "2040 Plastic Zero Jeju" initiative
championed by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, will be reviewed.
We invite scholars, experts, and entrepreneurs around the world to join us in our ambitious
quest to create a plastic-free global society by sharing their valuable experiences and
opinions.
Thank you.
Governor, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province
